Spoiled!

                            Image Detail

This week in class we are talking about children's media. Children's media plays a big role in advertising and selling products. When you direct something towards a kid in the right way you are most definitely going to make some money. Kids these days tend to be a lot more "Spoiled". They get what they want, when they want it and don't back down until they get it. Parents will spoil their children with whatever they ask for just to shut them up. I wonder if advertisers have children and think about what their children would do to get something they want. Having your ad’s directed towards kids is such a smart idea, but also very cruel towards the adults. Parents don't always want to fall in the traps of advertiser, but it happens sometimes and that when you get a very spoiled child. Parents need to stand their ground and tell their children no and not let them keep bugging them for a new toy, or for a different kind of cereal. parents, don't let your child over rule you!

Sex Sells

When you watch commercials at home, or when you’re flipping through a magazine, what goes through your head when you see how these products are being sold? Sex! We’ve all heard the phrase, “sex sells”, and everyone always has a different opinion about it. I can honestly say I’m stuck in the middle. I think that it can be bad at times, and sometimes it’s good. Do women really not like seeing David Beckham modeling in his underwear? Image DetailAnd what guy doesn’t Image Detaillike seeing the commercials for Victoria Secret. I work in an industry that the phrase “sex sells” definitely helps you out making a little more money. I’m not saying dress like a hooker to work every day, but when you dress nice to work people notice and they tip a little more. What guy wouldn't want to get a haircut by pretty girls who are dressed nice? Some people may not agree with that, but sometimes everyone gets some kind of benefits out of it. What can be a pretty negative side of these ad’s and commercials is that most teens growing up look at these things and think that those are perfect people and that’s how everyone should act and look.  Girls who are being bullied in school think that they should be these skinny stick figures that dress in skimpy clothing, and boys who look at these ad’s and think they should be these strong athletic men who have abs and muscles. Yeah it’s cool if you do grow up and you look like theses celebrities in these ads, but it’s totally fine if you don’t. You are who you are and you should never change that to get something you want.  You were born an original, don’t die a copy.

Go Big, Or Go Home!

As we begin our new section in women in media, a big topic has come up in our discussions. Weddings! Most women fantasize about their weddings since they were little girls. They know exactly what type of wedding they want, where it’s going to be located, what colors everything should be, and what type of flowers they want. Most people think that some women are crazy for fantasizing about this their whole lives. All I can say is you only live once , go big or go home!
I can’t say that I have been dreaming about my wedding since I was a child, but every now and then I just add on to my dream wedding list. There are so many shows out there that revolve around weddings. Some of them are helpful and give you good ideas, then others; you’re just kind of like what the hell is going on. One of my favorite wedding shows is on TLC, it’s called Say yes, to the dress. The brides go to these lavishing bridal boutiques to look for their dream dress. Most of the brides end up walking out with their dress, but some just can’t seem to make up their minds. While watching the show you get really good tips about the different styles of dresses and what looks good on you. This show is a good example of a positive wedding show. A negative wedding show would have to be BridezillaWho would want to watch a show about these women who have mental breakdowns before their wedding and act like horrible creatures? That is not what planning a wedding should be about. You should be having fun and enjoying every minute of it.

What a wedding should really be about though is just a bonding between you and the person you truly love. It shouldn’t be about how much you spent on a dress, or what type of flowers you have. Even though we see couples getting married and having huge marvelous weddings, there are still a good amount of people who like to keep it small and not spend their whole life savings for just one day. Personally I would love to have a huge wedding and I would spend the money to have everything I wanted happen. I'm just a "Go big, or go home" type of person.

Just a Little Nip & Tuck!

“Look at my nose, look at these arms, I want bigger boobs!” These are thoughts that go through many women’s heads every day. A few percentage of these women will go under the knife to correct their so called “flaws”. They think nothing of the risk and what kind of message it sends to people. So many famous people go through many changes all thanks to plastic surgery. Everyone wants to look like the perfect person, but really what is perfect? Is it to be so skinny you can wrap your hands around your waist, or to have the biggest boobs out of all your friends, or is it to have the freshest looking face, that you believe will last you forever. Sometimes women will take it a little to far when changing their appearance.

Image Detail A few years ago reality star Heidi Montag went a little over board with the plastic surgery. She dramatically changed her whole outer appearance. She told everyone she wanted to look perfect. Honestly, nothing looks perfect about having boobs the size of your head. It just screams trashy. For younger girls to see this and think that it's normal to look like this is just scary. This gives girls false hope about their own appearance. It makes them insecure, because they aren't a size double zero and they don't have big boobs.

Image DetailOver the summer I happened to find a TV show about these women competing against each other for plastic surgery. They wanted to look perfect before their wedding day, and the only way they thought they could achieve this was to go on this show and win plastic surgery. Then after they have won the show they get all this surgery and a dream wedding, but they don't get to see their husbands until they walk down the isle and flip up the veil. What ever happened to  its not about looks, they will fall in love with you for who you are. Well apparently no one goes by this any more.

Women need to realize that there is no such thing as being perfect. You are who you are and that should never change. One of my favorite quotes is, " Your born an original, don't die a copy." Stop trying to be like everyone else and just be yourself.

Having A Gay Ole Time!

Most people when they watch the WWE they are all about seeing someone getting knocked out and put in their place. They have fun cheering on the wrestlers and even seeing the women being put in their place. It’s all about masculinity and who is the manliest. Even though it’s all staged they are still performing these crazy stunts to show how manly they really are. These professionals think they are far from the word feminine. They want nothing to do with anything that will cause them to look “gay”. Well have you really ever sat there and thought about how these guys are wrestling each other to the ground wearing tight shorts and are covered in oil.

Image Detail
Hmm… something here just screams gay to me. You may be proving that you are tougher than your opponent, but don’t bash each other about how they are gay, when clearly your wrestling another guy to the ground. I personally don’t think it’s very manly at all.  All I have to say is put some clothes on!

Monkey See, Monkey Do!

When you are watching the news at night and it flashes on your screen, “child seriously hurt from doing dangerous stunts”, do you ever think to yourself, were did they get this crazy idea to do this? I always wonder what this person was trying to achieve out of doing this and what caused him to even attempt to do it. Then I think oh Monkey see, Monkey do. These kids are seeing things on TV that they think looks cool so they go home and try and react what was done. These kids need to realize that everything they see on TV is not real.

In our class this week, we watched a film on the WWE. What I got out of a part of it was that many younger kids see what is happening on the show and they try to react it at home. They had a few clips playing of the so called “backyard wrestling”, where people had made homemade videos of them wrestling, just as if they were in the WWE. One thing that you notice in their videos is after performing a stunt you don’t just see them pop up and act is if nothing has happened, but if you were to watch WWE you can see that the wrestlers just pop right back up. How can these people not realize that its fiction and that it’s all acting? When they first thought of the idea to recreate the stunt at home, did they not stop and think, oh this could turn out badly? When you think about it though, do you ever see on TV something go wrong? No, you only see the success stories.

There have been a few fatal incidents where children have been seriously injured or even killed by performing stunts. A few years ago a 9 year old boy died from attempting a WWE wrestling maneuver he saw on a WWE video game he was playing. He wanted to be like Jeff Hardy and performed a Swanton Bomb off the top of his apartment complex. They found the boy lying on the ground with just rope and a bag that he used as a parachute. Many people commented saying if only they were there to stop him before jumping off to tell him what would happen. Unfortunately it ended fatally.  If you’re going to let your child watch the WWE you need to educate them on how it is all fiction and it should not be performed in real life.  For parents who want a little more incite on the WWE here is a Link: http://corporate.wwe.com/parents/guidance.jsp

Can't Escape From The Music!

Have you ever been in your car and a song came on the radio that you didn’t like, so you changed the channel? When you changed the channel did a song you like that played on the other channel come on? You always think, “oh what a coincidence”, or “wow this must be a popular song, every channel is playing it”. In all actuality the song may be very popular, but the reason it plays on most stations would be because many stations are owned by the same company. One company that dominates the radio world would have to be Clear Channel.  They serve around 150 cities through 850 owned radio stations. Their stations can be heard on almost anything. Some examples would be; AM/FM stations, HD digital radio channels, Sirius/XM satellite.  The company also just created a new internet radio called iheartradio. Iheartradio allows you to create your own playlist by whom your favorite artist are, what kind of genera of music you like to listen to, or just the top hits on the radio at the time. You can stream it while you’re surfing the web or even on your phone. I personally love this app on my phone. I like to change up the type of music I’m listening to while I’m in the car. So I hook up my phone and type in what artist I’m obsessing over and it creates a playlist for me.  So next time when you’re in the car and your changing channels and hearing the same song on almost every channel, just think they are all basically the same channel with a different name and DJ.
